How do you make decisions?
Choosing can be stressful. We are wired to be cautious, so clear and concise choices aren’t always easy. We’ve all lingered in the “I don’t know” zone--sometimes for so long that even THAT begins to feel uncomfortable.
Indecision requires our brains to mull over the options, again and again.
Choosing should be easy. We know what feels good to us, yes? We know what we want.
So then why is it seldom that way? Indecision arises when there’s a struggle between the head and the heart. We think we should be choosing one way, yet it doesn’t feel right in the body.
The thinking mind loves to overcomplicate.
Overcomplication looks procrastinating over details, or worrying excessively through the decision-making process. You might attempt to forecast every possible scenario, calculating potential losses or regrets. Maybe you’re waiting for someone else’s buy-in, just to be sure it all makes sense.
While an analytical approach can be helpful, overcomplication invites in too many options and shakes our confidence.
What Does Your Heart Have to Say?
There is a way to make decisions that feel right in the body, but it requires that you bypass your thinking mind.
No one teaches us this.
It’s a heart and body-based approach that asks for you to go beyond the logic. It's a place of calm and stillness, outside the realm of self-doubt and confusion.
The thinking mind will discourage you from going there. It wants guaranteed security. We forget that we can never know, with absolute certainty, that any analytically-derived choice is safe. We assume the most logical choice is the right one.
But our body knows. We’ve all lived through choices that didn’t feel quite right in our bodies, when we ignored the call of our heart. Heart-centered decisions feel grounding. You can trust that. Your inner wisdom allows you to access parts of your mind that you may not be able to access otherwise.
I recently came to my coach with a stockpile of unmade decisions. Needless to say, I was stressed. She advised that I write down every unresolved issue that crossed my mind that day. Out it poured onto paper. My job was to respond to every issue. To decide and move on.
This was game-changing. The truth is, my heart had already decided most of these matters. I knew what to do next. My thinking mind was stuck in procrastination, scared of making the wrong choice.
There Is No Wrong Choice
Here’s the thing—very little in life is permanent. You can choose again if need be. So just choose.
Imagine approaching your next decision with a little more curiosity and a greater willingness to trust your intuition. What if you allowed the input of the Universal Order and Intelligence that lies beyond the intellect?
You might notice reassuring signs that you are on the right path.
You might no longer need to question your decision-making skills, resisting what you already know.
You will know that you are on the right path when you feel good in your body.
Your heart is crystal clear on what it wants. It is the essence of simplicity, your trusted source for direction.
Tap into your body wisdom, and welcome more of what you want into your life.
